NOTE:  This is a slightly altered version of Joan Dempsey's current six-month writing life contract.


GOAL for 2015 is to continue working independently with a focus on my literary life.


  1. Secure an agent for Prelude
  2. Land book deal for Prelude
  3. Continue to do research on wrongful imprisonment and jury service for the next novel
  4. Begin new novel journal for recording ideas and resources


  • Apply for AROHO Gift of Freedom, Bellwether Prize, McKitterick Prize
  • Continue to monitor grant opportunities and apply to what makes sense – same with submission opportunities for Prelude, Vigilant and short stories.
  • Query literary agents for Prelude
  • Promote the Revision Intensive Workshop
  • 30 new participants in Improve Your Writing online course
  • 30 new participants in Revise with Confidence online course
  • Create new free online course, Revise Your Writing: Where to Begin
  • Continue social media engagement with priority focus on Twitter and Facebook, especially the Revise with Confidence FB group


  • Continue to read Poets & Writers and The New Yorker.
  • Read with a focus on contemporary novels and true crime. Listen to audio books with a focus on page-turners.
  • Read books on the craft of fiction, particularly with a focus on novel writing.


  • Read for and connect with writing group each month. Connect monthly with Maine writers.


  • Hike daily with dogs. Do yoga/other workout at least 4 days/week.
  • Eat well.
  • Meditate.
  • Spend time with important friends
  • Attend something cultural at least once a month with an emphasis on literary and art events.
